Do you remember what happened in September 2019? As a biennial promotion, the 7th continent representative brought a rubbish person to Istanbul. With this news, a new concept has entered our lives: the 7th continent. So why is the 7th continent on the agenda? Let's find the answer to this question together.
The area known as the 7th continent is the Pacific Pacific Garbage Area between Hawaii and California. This garbage area has an area of approximately 1,500,000 square kilometers. Imagine, this place can fit 2 Turkish Republics in it! The basis of this garbage island consists of a total of 1.8 trillion micro and macro plastic parts. The existence of this island threatens more than 700 species. Every year, a million seabirds lose their lives because of the plastic pieces here.
Consider this. A group of people brings trash to your home daily and you have to live in it. This is the situation where a lot of sea creatures live right now. The most painful part of this is that this garbage patch is not the only oceanic garbage patch in our world. There are 4 more garbage patches like this in our world and according to estimates, the plastic waste mass in the oceans will be equal to the mass of all sea creatures in 2050!
But how can we save our oceans from these garbage islands? In this regard, the duty of big organizations and states and our duty is very different. We can spread our sensitivity to this issue within us and arrange our lifestyles to include less plastic. For example, instead of drinking water from a plastic bottle, drinking water from a glass bottle can be a bit expensive, but invaluable for the creatures you will save. but the big question remains, what is the task of the big organizations and states on this issue?
Thanks to this well-written article I learned about the 7th continent and the environmental damage we are causing. It really inspired me to take action and help others in decreasing the high levels of plastic waste pollution.
